Best Swimsuits for Women Over 50

SUMMERTIME is coming . . . . and that means trips to the pool and the beach.    Which also means swim suit season.     Is your first thought – ugh!!   I’ll just stay inside?   NO, don’t do that . . .  let’s talk about bathing suits that are best for women over 50!

Can I get an AMEN that it is intimidating finding the right suit?    Especially if you’re looking at that belly or other parts of your body that you’re not confident about?    I’ve got some tips I’m going to share that will help you cover up and make you feel comfortable but still look amazing.

The Square-Cut One Piece

square-cut one-piece swimsuit

This is your typical one piece but it has one subtle detail:    a square neckline rather than a V or rounded neck.    The square makes it different and it a great choice if you have a large bust.   The square neck  makes sure too much skin doesn’t show and the  deep angular neckline lengthens the neck and chest area giving an optical illusion of being taller and slimmer.

It also minimizes your bust and doesn’t reveal too much cleavage.  It’s a great way to be comfortable and cool this year.

The Classic Tankini

Don’t you love a tankini – it gives you the feel of the traditional bikini but gives you the coverage of a one piece.     With the top that extends and covers most of your midriff it’s a great choice for us women over 50 as it covers that “muffin top”.    The tankini is a little bit sexier than a one piece in that it allows for a little skin exposure.   Plus you don’t have the clinginess of the one piece.   It’s a great compromise this season.

Two-Piece Ruffled-Top Bikini

For my  apple-shaped body women,  you don’t want to brings extra attention to your belly or abdomen and less attention to your chest. A great way to balance out the upper and lower half is by wearing a ruffled-top bikini.

You’ll wear a regular-sized two-piece bottom as the bottom half of your bikini, which allows you to show off those legs!    On the top half of your two-piece swimsuit will be a  feminine, ruffled tank top that billows out and hangs down over your midriff and the top of your bikini bottom. The great thing about the ruffled tank is that it directs the eye downward toward you legs and give you an extra minimizing effect!

This is one of my favorite choices for a swimsuit – I feel feminine and it brings the attention right where I want it.  Plus it gives comfort and coverage

Halter Top Swimsuit

Okay, sometimes, it can feel like you just can’t find the swimsuit that was meant for you. If you find yourself in that situation, consider trying either a halter top tie in either a one-piece or a two-piece.

Did you know that a halter top swimsuit  will enhance a big bust or small bust, and it narrows a wide shoulder.      It will allow you to control the tightness or looseness of the fastening at the back. You can make the top of the swimsuit fit more tight or allow for a certain amount of room for the bust.

It’s a great choice if you  want  more control over what you’re wearing, and the amount of coverage your suit gives you.   There are all sorts of cute – you can do a bikini, a tankini, a one piece and even a swim skirt.

TIPS FOR SHOPPING FOR A SUIT:

DO

  • Do try on lots; you might be surprised
  • Remember, swimsuits expand when they get wet (so go a size smaller)
  • Ties and adjustable straps help fit it to your body
    • Make it a little tight, then bend over and adjust the girls to make sure they are covered

DON’T

  • Choose the trend – find what your style and the fit for your body type is
  • Buy a larger suit for more coverage – it will only bulk up on you. Instead opt for a different design

PEAR BODY SHAPE

Tips and tricks

  • Look for a clean-skirted bottom that falls just below the largest part of the upper leg.
  • Avoid a boy short or thick-banded bottom. The extra fabric will only call attention to the lower half of the body.
  • A plunging neckline or eye-catching top draws the eye upward, minimizing the bottom.

CURVY BODY SHAPE

Tips and tricks

  • Asymmetrical suits draw the eye toward the neckline, highlighting the line from your neck to your collarbone
  • Color blocking can help highlight your shape, as can retro suits (think high waists and boxy halter tops)
  • Retro one piece (think old movie star) are fabulous for this shape

STRAIGHT BODY TYPES

Tips and tricks

  • Tops or bottoms with bold prints, ruffles, and embellishments add intrigue and flair and can create the appearance of more curve at the top and bottom.
  • Monokinis create fabulous curves, as do one-pieces with slashes or strategically placed cutouts.
  • The smaller the swimsuit bottom, the fuller and curvier the derrière appears.
  • Tie-side bikini bottoms enhance curves and adjust perfectly to your size.

APPLE BODY SHAPE

Tips and tricks

  • A flattering surplice-wrap silhouette trims the waist with its crossover fabric.
  • A retro-inspired, high-waisted suit is always a good choice for more coverage. They’re on trend and cover the abdomen.

CARROT BODY TYPE

Tips and tricks

  • Bottoms with bold prints, ruffles, and embellishments add intrigue and flair and can create the appearance of more curve at the bottom.
  • V neck suits will bring the attention downward.
  • Stay away from thin straps – will make your shoulders look wider
  • Halter necks with wide straps are perfect.
  • Stay away from bold patterns on your top half.
  • Opt for funky bottoms with frills or print
